Why the NLRB Matters
Sep 06, 2013

Corporate America and their allies in the Senate are trying to kill the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

The NLRB is the federal agency for protecting workers' rights, and corporate America knows it. That's why they've waged a five year campaign to destroy the NLRB. We need everyone to take action and call your Senators and tell them to confirm the five NLRB nominees.

Clarence AdamsTake the case of Clarence Adams, a Marine, Iraq War Veteran and father.

Adams was a 14-year employee of Cablevision when he was fired along with 21 fellow workers for requesting a meeting with management, under the company's open door policy, to discuss stalled contract negotiations.

One year earlier, 260 Cablevision workers voted for union representation.

They voted despite threats from the company, who then refused to bargain in good faith.

Clarence Adams and the 21 other Cablevision workers filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. After community activists rallied around the 22 workers, and they were reinstated.

We need the NLRB, so that the firings of Clarence Adams and his fellow workers will be rectified.

Jen TravisTake the case of Jen Travis, 15-year Verizon employee, mother of three, perfect record at work.

Travis was one of 85 Verizon strikers who were suspended or dismissed after CWA's two-week strike against Verizon in summer 2011.

Travis was on a picket line. Verizon claimed this 5'2" mom, with child in tow, kicked a manager, and suspended and then fired her.

She was out of work for 14 months, no pay, no benefits. She went into debt. She suffered health issues due to the stress.

The NLRB investigated and filed a complaint against Verizon for illegally firing Travis and her co-workers. When CWA settled the Verizon contract in November 2012, Travis got her job back.

We need the NLRB, to protect Travis, and all workers who stand up for their rights.

Tyrone RiggsTake the case of Tyrone Riggs, father of two, 14 years as a field engineer at CNN.

Riggs and 110 other technicians lost their jobs when CNN created a phony organization, just to get rid of union-represented employees.

The NLRB investigated and ruled against CNN. The NLRB ordered immediate reinstatement for Riggs and 110 co-workers, full back pay, and negotiation with NABET-CWA.

CNN challenged the decision, now questioning the legal authority of the NLRB that ruled against them.

In the meantime, Riggs has had to take minimum wage jobs with no medical insurance for his family. He got into debt, lost his home and filed for bankruptcy.

We need a functioning NLRB to bring justice for Riggs and the 110 former CNN workers.
